We have created a holistic medical environment at Equine Health Solutions that has integrated complimentary treatment options like chiropractic and acupuncture with western medicine to comprehensively serve the needs of your horse.  The option at Equine Health Solutions is yours to take advantage of either western medicine, eastern medicine or a combination for the treatment of your horse.  We offer general routine medical management and preventative care like vaccinations, dentals or teeth floating and quantitative fecals for strategic deworming through more complex and in-depth issues like lameness, reproductive management, internal medical issues, diagnostics, and surgery.

Lameness
In regards to lameness evaluations, a thorough comprehensive exam from mouth to tail is conducted. You might ask why look in the mouth? A lot of subtle lameness or riding behavioral issues can arise from dental problems or jaw joint pain. Consequently, the whole musculoskeletal system is palpated and examined for pain or misalignments. By motioning each joint to determine the joints mobility, overall musculoskeletal movement is uncovered to establish its influence on the lameness.  Diagnostic acupuncture scan is utilized to help find painful areas of the horse.  An evaluation of the hoof capsule conformation and measurements of the distal limb are evaluated. As the old saying holds true "No Hoof, No Horse", we work closely with the farrier to keep your athlete performing. Just like an elite race car has to have all parts mechanically tuned, your athlete has to have all parts of his musculoskeletal system in top condition to perform at its maximum level. So we conduct a thorough comprehensive exam and use diagnostic tests like radiology (x-rays) and ultrasound along with well-trained and fine-tuned human palpation skills to formulate a treatment protocol.

Chiropractic
With integration into traditional Veterinary Medicine, chiropractic is used to restore biomechanical motion and nerve function.  It has also been proven to influence the immune system.  In respect to performance and lameness, the sum of all the horse’s joint motion dictates the movement or stride of the horse.  With each restricted joint, the overall movement, stride and performance of the horse is reduced.  The restricted joint allows fluid to accumulate in the intravertebral foramen.  This edema puts pressure on the spinal nerve exiting the spinal column.  The function of the nerve is diminished along with the function of the organ or structure the nerve communicates with.  This is one of the reasons Chiropractic adjustments can help chronic colicing horses.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the treatment arms of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.  As it is integrated into “Western” Veterinary Medicine, more treatment options become available for our patients.  Acupuncture is the stimulation of acupoints on the body which cause local and central nervous system changes.  Hormonal changes in the brain which occur with the treatment causes pain relief responses, immune responses and body function changes.  The changes occurring due to acupuncture treatment is verified in numerous research articles.  Acupuncture treatments compliment the traditional western veterinary treatments.  Acupuncture diagnostic scan can be more sensitive then other diagnostic options in detecting early disease changes.  A preventative medicine position can be added to the traditional veterinary medicine approach.

Podiatry
Podiatry is the foundation for achieving full athletic potential of your horse.  Proper hoof care and balance influence the biomechanical movement of the horse.  Visual evaluation of the hoof along with radiographic (x-rays) evaluation of the bone structures within the hoof are needed for solve some of the biomechanical problems with the horse’s gait.  We have on-site farriers that work closely with Dr Wagner to improve the lower limb of your horse. Shoeing prescriptions and phone calls with your farrier can help those horses not shod at the clinic.

Dental Care
We offer comprehensive dental care at Equine Health Solutions. A majority of riding behavioral problems originate in the mouth. We offer power dental equilibration. While under sedation, the complete oral cavity is evaluated including each tooth, the tongue, and gum surface. The abnormal findings in the horse’s mouth are discussed with the client before the teeth are equilibrated by floating. After the molars are equilibrated the incisors or front teeth are examined and equilibrated if needed. We are able to identify with radiology and remove diseased teeth in the standing horse. This eliminates the risks involved with laying a horse down to extract a tooth

Preventative Care
In the area of preventative care we offer physical examinations, routine vaccinations, electronic coggins and quantitative fecals for strategic deworming, along with dental care.  At Equine Health Solutions we believe prevention is crucial in keeping your horse healthy. Along with vaccinations and deworming, a semi-annual physical can identify needed maintenance issues and subtle medical issues before they become major medical problems. So when we vaccinate your horse a general physical and acupuncture scan is performed including evaluating eyes, lymph nodes, skin, heart and lungs, pulse, mucous membranes, tongue, joints, tail and anal tone, external genitalia, and teeth. This allows identification of those horses that need additional preventive maintenance and medical care.

Reproductive Management
Proper reproductive management begins with selection and evaluation, needed treatments, insemination, and mare care to create the greatest opportunity for a successful foaling. Initially the mare needs to be evaluated, the age and history of the mare determines what tests need to be performed to determine the reproductive potential of your mare. Maiden mares less than ten years of age just need a physical and ultrasound evaluation. While older mares or mares with a history of reproductive problems may need a physical, ultrasound evaluation, vaginal/cervical exam, uterine bacterial culture, uterine cytology, uterine biopsy, chiropractic and acupuncture exams to determine the reproductive condition and odds of getting the mare in foal and carrying it to term. After the reproductive condition of the mare is determined and any necessary treatments performed, the mare is ready to be bred. We offer in-house or on farm breeding services. Daily palpations to determine size and consistency of the enlarging follicle are performed to determine the proper time for insemination of the mare with semen. Daily ultrasound to determine follicular size on the ovary alone is not efficient in monitoring the progression of the mare's heat cycle. When the mare is ready for the semen we can instruct live cover or inseminate with fresh cooled or frozen semen.

Mares are checked 24 hours after breeding to ensure fluid clearance from the uterus or the embryo could be lost. If the mare owner is open to chiropractic and acupuncture evaluation and treatment, these complimentary treatment options can be used to increase the odds of a successful breeding program.  In addition to offering in-depth and comprehensive breeding services we also provide stallion evaluation, collecting and shipping of cooled semen.

Diagnostics & Surgery
Equine Health Solutions has an experienced clinician in equine medicine and surgery to evaluate diagnostic tests. In-house blood analysis allows for immediate results for critical care patients along with bacteriological testing. Ultrasound, radiology (x-rays), and endoscope are used on a daily basis. Also included in the lab are semen evaluation capabilities.

Equine Health Solutions is able to perform most elective surgeries in our surgical suite. The use of the surgery suite is preferred for the safety and efficiency of the surgeon as well as the safety of the patient. We are a full service equine veterinary practice and can evaluate all general medical and surgery needs of your horse. We offer nutritional counseling and general equine health care with the integration of complimentary treatments of chiropractic and acupuncture.
